The abstract-seeming images here are not the result of some wacky Photoshopping. Jay Mark Johnson’s photos are actually incredibly precise. The reason they look like this is because he uses a slit camera that emphasizes time over space. Whatever remains still is smeared into stripes, while the motion of crashing waves, cars and a Tai Chi master’s hands are registered moment by moment, as they pass his camera by. Like an EKG showing successive heartbeats, the width of an object corresponds not to distance or size, but the rate of movement. Viewing the left side of the picture is not [ Read More ]

Belgian painter Ben Heine has been taking photos and drawing almost since he was 10 years old. This “Pencil Vs Camera” series is nothing but the result of several years of graphic exploration and a logic consequence of his artistic evolution, says Ben. But the real idea came while he was watching television and writing a letter. Reading my letter before putting it in the envelope, I saw in transparency the television behind the paper. I then realized it would be great to make something similar in a single image showing 2 different actions.I went outside and Drew “Pencil Vs [ Read More ]

You may be the best photographer in the world, but sometimes all it takes to take the best shot is being in the right place at the right moment. It doesn’t even matter if you take it with your cell or high-end DSLR. Often, you won’t even notice you made an incredible picture until you come home and transfer your photos to a computer. However, that doesn’t mean you should stop improving your photography skills and just wait for that one and only moment. As a popular saying goes: “Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity.” So be prepared [ Read More ]
While many photographers are in the race for the latest gear (ironically, I’m currently waiting for my Nikon D800 shipment), 16-year-old Spanish photographer Cristina Otero uses her cheap Canon 1000D and 50mm f1.8 lens to create the most incredible self-portraits. In her series called “Tutti Frutti”, Otero cleverly combines various fruits with bold makeup colors creating some of the most powerful portraits I’ve ever seen. Interestingly, she doesn’t even use any studio lights. All Otero needs is a natural light coming from the window. As much as I hate her for putting me to shame with all my expensive gear [ Read More ]
