Indonesia’s Geophysical Agency says a fresh aftershock of 8.2 magnitude has hit off the Sumatra province of Aceh following an earlier 8.6 magnitude quake. A new tsunami warning has been issued. Indonesia’s disaster mitigation agency is sending a rescue team to Aceh, after the quake knocked out the province’s electricity and sent locals scrambling for higher ground, Reuters says. A 6.6 magnitude earthquake occurred Monday near the Santa Cruz Islands, Solomon Islands in the Pacific, said the American Institute of Geological Survey, but was not issued any tsunami alert. The quake occurred at 15.00 (06.00 GMT) at a depth of 38 kilometers and 350 kilometers east of Kirakira, the main town on the large island of the archipelago, Makira, according to USGS. Officials said Saturday they believe the latest earthquake activity in northeast Ohio is related to the injection of wastewater into the ground near a fault line, creating enough pressure to cause seismic activity. The brine wastewater comes from drilling operations that use the so-called fracking process to extract gas from underground shale.
