Seljalandsfoss is one of the most famous waterfalls of Iceland. It is a pretty famous waterfall dropping about 60m over the cliffs of the former coastline.
Upstream the river flows through Troll Gorge to Troll Gorge Marsh, a lovely hollow with flourishing vegetation, before tumbling down over a series of waterfalls, and finally off the cliff edge at Seljalandsfoss. It is possible to go behind the waterfall.
Seljalandsfoss is situated in between Selfoss and Skógafoss at the road crossing of Route 1 (the Ring Road) with the track going into Þórsmörk. Given its conspicuous position, it’s easily seen from the Ring Road and so its popularity shouldn’t be surprising as a result.
Seljalandsfoss is one of Icelands most beautiful waterfalls. Access to the waterfall is very good. It´s not the highest or mightiest but the fact that you can walk behind it makes it special. There is plenty of car parking, and footpaths in the surrounding area. Nearby is a good campsite at Hamragarðar.
The river is a fresh water river , not a glacier melt river. The cliffs in the mountains around Eyjafjallajökull, called Eyjafjöll, are covered with lush green vegetation from all the fertilizer which the nesting seabirds, which live there, bring to them.
In addition to the main cascade at Seljalandsfoss, smaller streams tumble off the cliff at its western side. Seljalandsfoss stands in a lovely location, surrounded by cliffs and green slopes. It is a landmark visible from far away as a white streak against the dark cliff face.
