Google celebrates Labor Day on Tuesday, May 1, with a special logo, represented by a worker equipped with overalls, helmet and tool kit, which lifted the Google logo.
Labour Day is also known as the May Day. Reduction of daily working standard hourly fed into the significance of May 1st as International Workers Day. In 1872, about 100,000 workers in New York most of the construction industry, have demonstrated, demanding reduction of working time to 8 hours.
May 1 is, for the first time about the meeting, in 1886, the Federation of Trade Unions of the United States and Canada (precursor of the American Federation of Labor). George Edmonston, founder of Carpenters and Carpenters Union, has initiated the introduction of a resolution stipulating that “8:00 to constitute legal working day from and after May 1, 1886″, suggesting its respect for workers’ organizations.
On May 1, 1886, hundreds of thousands of demonstrators protested throughout the United States, but the biggest demonstration took place in Chicago, where they met 90,000 people, of which about 40,000 were on strike. The result was that about 35,000 workers won the right to work 8 hour day without reduction of wages.
But on May 1 has become known worldwide as a result of violent incidents that took place three days later in Chicago Heymarket Market. Number had risen to more than 65,000 strikers and police after the collision with more casualties resulted.
In 1888, at a meeting of the American Federation of Labor was established that on May 1, 1890 to be held demonstrations and strikes, to reduce working hours of 8:00. And in 1889, the Social Democrats affiliated with the International ll, established in Paris, the day May 1 to be an international day of workers. On May 1, 1890, there were demonstrations in the U.S., most European countries, in Chile, Peru and Cuba.
Soon, the American Federation of Labor denied altogether May 1, instead celebrating Labor Day annually on the first Monday of September. On June 28, 1894, Congress passed an act confirming this time as a legal holiday.
